Discovering Your Style Personality

Have you ever wondered…do I have a style?
Sometimes we get a good sense of who we are in high school or college but…
  1. Is your go-to look too casual for work?
  2. Is that style now out of date?
  3. Has who you want to be and how you want to be seen changed since then?

Well… it’s time to figure it out sugar!… not only because it’s fun but also because it can give you a really good sense of what to look for when you are shopping and building your work wear wardrobe.

I’ve broken down what I call “Style Personalities” into 7 different categories:

  • Casual
  • Trendy
  • Classic
  • Elegant
  • Modern
  • Edgy
  • Retro

Most people fall into one particular category more than the others. Let’s see if you can discover yours!

Is your style CASUAL?

Casual people like to be laid back and comfortable overall. Comfortable can be boy boyish or feminine.

Leans away from: skirts, dresses and feminine details like frills/sequins

Leans towards: looser details like T-shirts, scarves, vests, pants or sweaters.

Celebrity Inspiration – Elle DeGeneres, Rachel Bilson, Jessica Biel

Why this style is AWESOME: it can transition easily to weekend wear

Be careful to:  match your casual style to workplace expectations. Your natural tendencies may be too casual so bump up the formality by making sure jeans are dark wash or non-jean, lose the holes and rips and try blazers – they always up the formality factor while still being casual.

Is your style TRENDY?

Trendy people are all about what’s hot now. If your style is ‘Trendy’ then you find it difficult to stop yourself from buying that item everyone is wearing…coloured blazers, lace, florals, colour blocked outfits….you name it!

Leans away from: Anything last season.

Leans towards: Any style that is new, fresh and right off the fashion magazine pages.

Celebrity Inspiration – Kim Kardashian (+ sisters), Jessica Alba, Lauren Conrad, Olivia Palermo

Why this style is AWESOME:  Trendy people rarely get stuck in a time warp because they are focused on constantly updating their style.

Be careful to:  Not bankrupt yourself. Keeping up with the latest trends is super fun but will create a deficit in your bank account pronto. Try balancing your trendy inclinations with some classic purchases that can serve as a canvas for your ever changing style. Also, be careful to pick and choose the trends that work for your body type. Just cause they work on the runway doesn’t mean they are the best choice for you.

Is your style CLASSIC?

The Classics love a timeless wardrobe that fits well, looks professional and has feminine airs but not necessarily outwardly feminine details.

Leans away from: Bold & bright colours and outwardly feminine details like flowers, pastels and sparkle.

Leans towards: Neutrals like white, grey, brown and black.

Celebrity Inspiration – Jennifer Aniston, Diane Sawyer, Katie Holmes, Kate Winslet

WHY this style is awesome : Because the pieces you buy aren’t tied to a time or era, they tend to look great now and 10 years from now.

Be careful to: Not get bogged down in neutral-ville. Experiment from time to time with colour by buying a piece in a classic silhouette (like a wrap dress) but in an unexpected colour like red or burnt orange.

Is your style ELEGANT?

If you’re ‘Elegant’, you tend to be a bit conservative and love to flaunt your girly style with bold, fresh colour choices like aqua, yellow and hot pink and pretty details like lace, sequins, jewels, and flowers. Your hair is always just so, and highlighting feminine features like your waist and decolletage is easy because you are drawn to dresses and skirts that do that for you.

Leans towards: Girly bright colours like aqua, fuchsia and lemon yellow and pretty details like lace, jewels, and flowers.

Leans away from: pants, flats, button down shirts,

Celebrity Inspiration – Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Middleton

Why this style is AWESOME: It plays up your your feminine side and lets your co-workers know that you can be powerful, professional and pretty.

Be careful to: Not break out those open toed sandals at the workplace. Your pretty florals may be begging for your pedicure to make an appearance but leave your toe cleavage for the garden party you are attending on Sunday.

Is your style RETRO?

If you’re ‘Retro’ you love celebrities that can pull off styles of the past and make them current like 70s style tunics and maxi dresses, 50s circle skirts and fitted pencil skirts from the 40s.

Leans towards: style sensations from the past like hour glass dresses and glam of the 40’s, girly details of the 50s, quirkiness of the 60s or hippiness of the 70s.

Leans away from: Classic style clothes like blazers and button down shirts. They are just too boring and don’t show your personality.

Celebrity Inspiration – Scarlett Johannson (40s), Michelle Williams (60s), Ginnifer Goodwin (60s), Nicole Richie (70s), Sienna Miller (70s),

Why this style is AWESOME– you take killer trends that worked in decades past and make them work for you now.

Be careful to – Mix a bit of “NOW” in with the past. Translating a trend from an era gone by  too literally and it may get a bit costumey. Take one or two elements and mix them with classics for a feel that’s current.

Is your style MODERN?

If you are drawn to everything new and unique you tend to be a ‘Modern’ girl. Modern isn’t necessarily about silver fabric and alien looking outfits (although lady gaga does pull this off well). It’s more about your love for wearing a style that has nothing to do with recycled trends. You want your jackets and dresses in a shape that no one has seen before but still manage to compliment your body and stay work appropriate

Leans towards: any piece that is new and different from anything you’ve seen before.

Leans away from: any recycled trend. Those crop tops should stay in the 90s. Think of something new people!

Celebrity Inspiration: Gwyneth Paltrow, Sara Jessica Parkers, Jennifer Hudson, Cate Blanchett, Victoria Beckham

Why this style is AWESOME: The pieces you pick are things that get attention because they are so bold and unique. Be careful to: remember that boundary pushing is fun but it may also push workplace boundaries too. Take care to experiment within the confines of your workplace appropriateness.

Is your style EDGY?

If you love getting attention for being tough yet pretty then ‘Edgy’ is your style. ‘Edgy’ girls can’t help but purchase those hard edged items like black rimmed glasses and animal print pencil skirts and throwing a leather bomber jacket in for fun. For them, it’s not just about the clothes – the hair must have edge too. Forget simple cuts, you won’t step outside unless your hair is spiked, blunted or coloured in an unforgettable way.

Leans towards: the colour black and anything with texture like leather, studs or zippers

Leans away from: anything simple and girly. Cardigans are for suckers.

Celebrity Inspiration – Jada Pinkett Smith, Annette Benning, Gwen Stefani

Why this style is AWESOME: It gives off a confidence and risk taking edge that people tend to respect.

Be careful to: remember that the same style that pulls people in can be the same thing that pushes people away. Your style may translate  better in some office environments than in others. so know where you work and what they expect in terms of dress code.Edgy Celeb style

Finding your style personality is just one step along the way to building a wardrobe that is truly YOU. Take your time and take note of people who have a style you are drawn to and remember, trying is NOT buying! Don’t be afraid to try things that are way out there but that you are drawn to. You might just find a style that you can’t live without.
